*September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month*
The Lions Prostate Cancer Awareness event which was successfully held on 1 September 2026 with a FULL house.

Guest speakers: Dr Sam Davies – Mater Urologist & Robotics, Deidre – Mater Cancer Care Specialist Nurse, Prof. John Hooper – Mater Research, Cr Ryan Murphy– BCC Councillor & Prostate Cancer Awareness Advocate, for giving up their time with great information and discussions.
Mens Health & Awareness event was held in the month of September to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness month, with the aim of promoting Prostate Cancer early detection and awareness. The Prostate Cancer Awareness event was co-hosted by Brisbane Holland Park Lions Club.

Other recent events
In April 2026 Cabarita Beach and Pottsville Beach Lions Club successfully held “TWEED COAST PEDAL FOR PROSTATES” bike ride along the Northern Rivers Rail Trail to raise funds for prostate cancer research. Fundraiser ride started from Masterton Park, Burringbar NSW Hosted by https://lionscbpb.org.au
Lions Prostate Cancer Awareness event was held at Holland Park in September 2025. Awareness event format: Presentation by Cr Ryan Murphy (BCC Councillor) and also presentations by 2 Mater Clinicians and Professor Hooper from Mater Research – followed by Q&A.
Lions Clubs throughout Australia have made a significant $160,000 donation to the Mater Research to support prostate cancer research.
On 5 June 2025, Lions Prostate Cancer Research & Treatment, at Translational Institute (TRI) at Woolloongabba, on behalf of Lions Clubs throughout Australia has made a significant $160,000 donation to the Mater Foundation to support prostate cancer research.
This donation, part of a larger effort, will be used to fund key technology and boost research at Mater Research.
The $160,000 donation is part of a broader initiative by Lions Clubs throughout Australia to combat prostate cancer. The funds will be used to enhance prostate cancer research and treatment at Mater Research. This includes supporting the purchase of advanced equipment, such as an ultrasound system, that will improve biopsy accuracy and treatment outcomes.
Lions Clubs of Australia has been a long-term partner with Mater, with 1,200 clubs and 25,000 members involved in fundraising efforts. Their contributions have also extended to research projects like immunotherapy, which utilizes the body’s immune system to fight cancer.
On behalf of Lions Clubs of Australia, in June 2024, we were able to donate to Mater Research as initial donation towards purchase of Cytiva AKTA go Chromatography System and consumables.
Donation cheque on behalf of Lions Clubs of Australia for $225,000 was accepted by Andrew Thomas CEO Mater Foundation and Prof. John Hooper from Mater Research. Lions Prostate Cancer Project representatives are Carol, Jerry, Project Chairman Patrick O’Donoghue & PDG Q3 Norm Jensen.
