Equipment donated to Mater Research

Details of how the club donations have been used to purchase equipment for prostate cancer research at Mater Research. Lions Clubs all over Australia, have been able to make to difference with donations to purchase equipment to enable world class research in search of a cure for Prostate Cancer.

For over 20 years, Lions Clubs throughout Australia with generous donations to The Lions Prostate Cancer Research & Treatment Project have been supporting the Mater Research / Mater Foundation with purchase of equipment to attempt to find a cure for Prostate Cancer.

Professor John Hooper and his team are currently working to adapt and improve the ICG dye so it can be used for prostate cancer. When the modified fluorescent dye is injected into the patient’s bloodstream prior to surgery, it circulates until it binds to the protein on the cancer cell where it effectively lights up the tumours to make them easier to see and be removed by the surgeon.

Mater Researcher, Professor Kristen Radford, who has long been the face of the research that Lions Clubs of Australia have made possible through its donations. Professor Kristen Radford’s world-class team are now leading the way in developing an ‘anti-tumour vaccine’.

This vaccine would enable the body’s immune system to kill cancer cells and eliminate them from the body. lf successful, this vaccine has the potential to eliminate several cancers including prostate, breast, ovarian, bladder, head and neck cancers, leukemia, metastatic melanomas and many more.

To continue their work, Mater Research needed to establish an Australian first facility that will progress Professor Radford’s vaccine into the critical establishment phase. The equipment needed for the facility includes items such as an AutoMACS Cell Separator which provides fast and gentle separation of the cells of interest for the human immune system model.
